Abstract

Industrialization remains a critical pathway for achieving sustainable development in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Despite decades of policy interventions, the region continues to experience low levels of industrial development, weak manufacturing capacity, and heavy dependence on primary commodity exports. This paper examines the evolution of industrialization policies in SSA and assesses their implications for sustainable development outcomes, with particular emphasis on economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability. Drawing on existing literature, policy documents, and regional experiences, the study argues that industrialization can significantly enhance development outcomes when guided by coherent policies, strong institutions, and environmentally responsible practices. The paper further highlights emerging strategies such as agroindustrialization, green industrial policy, and regional integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The study concludes that sustainable industrialization is indispensable for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in SSA, provided that economic objectives are harmonized with social and environmental considerations.
