Abstract

National security education is increasingly relevant to Nigeria's efforts to build resilient citizens and secure learning environments, yet its effectiveness is shaped by social, institutional and health-related conditions within educational settings. This study examines the relationship between social policy, microbiological risk factors and national security education in Nigeria using a secondary statistical assessment of recent national and international datasets and policy documents. The analysis draws on education statistics, school water, sanitation and hygiene indicators, health-security data, and national policy frameworks published principally between 2021 and 2026. Findings indicate that weaknesses in social-policy implementation and inadequate school-level health and environmental safeguards create conditions that can undermine educational continuity, learner wellbeing, institutional resilience and broader human security. Nigeria's 2024/2025 education statistics identify more than 215,000 schools and over 40 million learners, while UNICEF reports that only 37% of Nigerian schools have basic water services and 30% have basic sanitation services. These deficits expose educational communities to microbiological hazards and increase vulnerability to disease outbreaks and disruption. The study argues that national security education should incorporate health security, biological-risk awareness, resilience and preventive social policy. It concludes that an integrated approach linking education policy, microbiological risk management, security education and intersectoral cooperation is necessary for strengthening Nigeria's human and national security architecture.
