Abstract

This study investigated sustainable development programme for effective teaching in public secondary schools in Abia State. Two research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. The sample for the study consisted of 263 senior secondary school teachers (comprising of 200 female and 63 male) drawn across the 3 Local Government Area of Umuahia Education Zone of Abia State from population of 2,630. The instrument used for this study is derived from researcher-made-rating scale titled: Teachers Sustainable Development Programme for Effective Teaching Questionnaire (TSDPETQ). The face validity of the questionnaire was established by three research experts all in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike. The reliability co-efficient was determined. The overall coefficient value of 0.71 was obtained. Data obtained through the administration of the instrument were organized and analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions while t-test statistic was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of probability which revealed the following findings: seminar and mentoring influence teachers’ effectiveness for effective teaching in public secondary schools among others. The study concluded that there was great impact of seminars and mentoring for effective teaching in public secondary schools in Umuahia Education Zone of Abia State. It was recommended that regular conducts of seminar and mentorship to enhance effective teaching should be applied
