Abstract

The First Industrial Revolution, conventionally dated from about 1750 to 1840, marked one of the most profound transformations in human history, converting Britain from a predominantly agrarian and handicraft economy into the world's first industrial society. This paper examines the origins, character, and consequences of that transformation. It argues that the Revolution was not a single dramatic event but a gradual, cumulative process rooted in a distinctive combination of agricultural improvement, demographic growth, abundant coal and iron, accumulated capital, expanding overseas markets, and a supportive institutional and scientific culture (Allen, 2009; Mokyr, 2009). The paper traces the wave of key innovations in textiles, iron, and steam power that mechanised production and gave rise to the factory system, and it explores the far-reaching social consequences of industrialisation, including urbanisation, the emergence of new social classes, and the harsh living and working conditions that provoked reform. It concludes that while the First Industrial Revolution generated enormous wealth and laid the foundations of the modern world, its benefits were unevenly distributed, a tension that continues to shape historical debate. Throughout, the paper draws on both classic and recent scholarship to present a balanced account suitable for undergraduate study.
